Overview

Tōku Ara OraNGA – TAONGA was a Māori-led, multi-stage research project, with an almost entirely Māori research team. The project explored the development of a Kaupapa Māori-informed co-design of outpatient care for thyrotoxicosis, aiming to improve the delivery of healthcare to whānau. It utilised co-design methods within a Kaupapa Māori methodology and recognised the importance of challenging western approaches to research.

As part of the project’s commitment to reimagining processes of dissemination, TAONGA shared information throughout the project rather than only at its conclusion. The first of these disseminations occurred at the end of 2023 (marking the end of Stage 2 of the project).

The summer internship focused on the dissemination of findings to the whānau involved in the project. The intern engaged with whānau to understand what information they wanted shared and how they wished it to be presented. Dissemination was not limited to written formats; instead, the presentation of information was encouraged to challenge conventional norms, grounded in Kaupapa Māori values. New forms of presentation included, but were not limited to, waiata, art, and the inclusion of pūrākau. The resulting dissemination outputs were used in the wider project, in subsequent stages, and in final dissemination activities.
