    Project commenced:

    The purpose of this project is to examine the Māori and Pacific archives in the Hocken Library pertaining to Tangaroa, the ocean and the sea. The intern will undertake archival research specifically within the Hocken Library and this will form part of the initial stages of the Māori programme of research within the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge.

    Astronomy is the study of the objects in the sky (stars, planets, moons, galaxies, comets etc). Traditionally Māori held great knowledge of astronomy and their studies of the night sky played an important role in everyday life. Much of this knowledge remains recorded in te reo Māori and sits within karakia, waiata, whakataukī, and within place names. This project explores the language of Māori astronomy to understand how important it was to our ancestors. It will also help to revive the language of Māori astronomy exploring how this knowledge can be used in a modern world.

    Project commenced:

    This research project’s origins date back 27 years when Dr Joe Te Rito helped establish local Māori radio station Radio Kahungunu at the Hawke’s Bay Polytechnic, Taradale. Joe saw how the dialect of his iwi Rongomaiwahine-Ngāti Kahungunu was diminishing in quality, in terms of grammatical and spoken fluency, with each generation. The station was to fill the gap for children who did not have Māori spoken in the home or role models to learn te reo from. While schools looked after education, the station wanted to bring the voices into the home.

    The guiding research question for this project are:

    1) How has Tuurangawaewae Marae fostered community mauri ora (wellbeing) within Waikato and in Te Ao Maaori more broadly?

    2) What role has Tuurangawaewae Marae played as both a repository and a place of action for te Reo me ngaa Tikanga in Waikato and in Aotearoa-New Zealand?

    3) What are the factors underpinning Tuurangawaewae Marae’s endurance as a centre for Maaori political action and manaakitanga (caring for community) both nationally and for Waikato whaanau

    What does tikanga Māori mean in today’s context; how is tikanga Māori understood and practiced within iwi, hapū, whānau, marae and more broadly in our everyday practices and national institutions; and how can key Māori principles and practices such as wānanga, kaitiakitanga, hakairo Māori, and wairua Māori more holistically drive research, professional and daily practice?

    What existing research, collation, archivingand disseminating of knowledge specific to te reo me ngā tikanga Māori has been done to date across Aotearoa New Zealand within Māori communities, government agencies, and research institutions’, what additional strategies can be used to further support the normalising of te reo me ngā tikanga in the modern world to create communities of practice; and how can iwi, hapū, whānau and marae be further empowered to advance te reo me ngā tikanga, including to share and communicate knowledge effectively with one another?

    Project commenced:

    How do we collectivise what we have for greater gain? How can we best create sustainable new te reo me ngā tikanga narrative led research to refresh, renew and recover te reo me ngā tikanga knowledge narratives and scholarships and support reo speaking communities and scholars and what national and institutional strategies are required to truly enable te reo me ngā tikanga-led research?

    This platform project is focused on collectivising te reo me ngā tikanga Māori researchers to support inspirational te reo writers for intergenerational empowerment, greater revitalisation, normalisation and practice within our research settings.

  • Kia Ārohi Kia Mārama - Scoping Excellence

    Project commenced:

    What is the reo of traditional navigation?

    How, why, when and where were these navigational aids used in Māori navigation?

    What are the perspectives of contemporary tohunga whakatere waka on Māori navigation aids today?

    Which stars and why do contemporary tohunga whakatere waka use in Māori navigation?

    In the past 40yrs, a regeneration of traditional navigation knowledge has occurred across Polynesia. However, a paucity of Māori navigation research is extremely prevalent.

Hei reira anō ka whakamōhiotia atu ki ngā mana tiaki o taua rohe, ka whakariterite tikanga hoki hei tiaki i te tai. Ko te rohe e tohua ana ko te ākau o Tokomaru i te raki ki Whāngārā i te tonga. Ko te rohe tēnei o ngā karangatanga hapū o Ngāti Porou, o Te Aitanga a Hauiti, o Ngāti Konohi, o Ngāti Ira anō hoki.

     

  • Internship project

    Project commenced:

    This summer internship project will identify occasions where haka, waiata and other oral art forms were commonly used as a form of expression, the frequency in which these occasions occurred and the purpose of these expressions for each situation. Each of these occasions employed a particular style of oral art form. In addition to collating information of the occasions in which they were used, this project will also identify the type of expression, its form and linguistic features, the style of its performance, the social dynamics of engagement, as well as highlighting any tribal distinctiveness, where applicable.
