Deadline: 29 March 2023

This is a collaboration between Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) and Coastal People: Southern Skies (CPSS). We are making a short call for excellent research activities that have scholarly, creative and/or community engagement dimensions that serve to document, interrogate and communicate the spectrum of displacement impacts that have affected Māori communities due to Cyclone Gabrielle. Displacement may be interpreted broadly and relate to any cyclone related interruption of everyday life, both short or long term.

This call is focused geographically on Te Tairāwhiti, Ngāti Kahungungu and Te Taitokerau. Our intention is that the fund will support Māori community led research within these regions and that NPM and CPSS will provide research advice and expertise as appropriate. We anticipate funding only one project in each region. We welcome expressions from hapū/marae, rūnanga, hauora, kaupapa Māori community agencies, or trusts.

Leaders of EOI projects selected for funding will be expected to work with NPM and CPSS to evolve their projects and documentation, and to share methods and ongoing insights as part of our broader and ongoing programme of cyclone and climate change related research.

This grant is open to:

  • Māori community leaders from Te Tairāwhiti, Ngāti Kahungungu and Te Taitokerau
  • Emerging and established Māori researchers from NPM partner organisations in support of Māori community leaders or groups based in the above region.
  • Emerging and established researchers from Coastal People: Southern Skies in support of Māori community leaders or groups based in the above region.

EOIs will be assessed by the NPM and CPSS Co-Directors, the Chair of the NPM research committee and Chair of CPSS Board.

We will support the resourcing of projects up to $35, 000 (ex GST) per project.  Projects are expected to formally begin in May 2023.

All grant activity and agreed outputs must be completed by 31 December 2023.  There will be no overheads to tertiary institutions.

How to make an expression of interest:

Please complete the attached form providing as much detail as possible and email to cpss@otago.ac.nz. Where possible, letters of support from hapū/marae, rūnanga, hauora, and/or kaupapa Māori community agencies and trusts will be appreciated but are not required at this stage.  If you wish to discuss a research idea with us, are wanting support to make an EOI or are seeking further information, please email Amanda-Jane Woodhouse cpss@otago.ac.nz to set up a discussion.
