Programme
The foundational purpose of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga was to conduct research of relevance to Māori peoples – research which brings positive change. Our initial vision involved the transformation of New Zealand so Māori participate fully in all aspects of society and the economy.

In our first years, we invested heavily in creating a critical mass of Māori researchers and establishing an environment for Māori-relevant research. In 2010, we deepened this focus to explore the nature and benefit of Māori participation in our society and economy led by our new vision.

We remain engaged with uplifting the participation and success of Māori people in research. However, we supplement this by asking what Māori might contribute to new knowledge, economic development, environmental sustainability, health and social wellbeing and educational achievement and other research fields.

Our research addresses two crucial concerns:

  • Creative opportunities for Māori peoples, for example those represented by new organisations and assets established through the settlement of Treaty claims and the creative potential of mātauranga Māori and indigenous knowledge
  • Needs, problems and issues arising in Māori peoples such as health disparities, educational underachievement, imprisonment rates, violence and more.
