Capability Building

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga approaches capacity and capability building by fostering nodes of research excellence.

Our interest is to develop people who are expert in the methodologies and approaches required to meet our research goals and thus contribute to achieving our vision. During ‘Phase One’ of NPM (2002–2010) we invested heavily in increasing the number of Māori people training to become researchers. Our goal of 500 Māori PhDs was a mechanism for creating this critical mass of researchers. Our interest now is keenly focused upon the capabilities we require to deliver upon our research aspirations. Furthermore, we are interested to develop distinctive approaches to knowledge maintenance, creation and application. We build research capacity and capability in the following ways:

  1. In the conduct of research projects and programmes.
  2. Through the MAI te Kupenga programme currently designed to uplift Māori particpation and success in tertiary education.
  3. Through a grants and awards programme which provides support for Māori academics at pre-doctoral through to early and mid-career levels.
