Tracing the building of a waka in the far north Te Roroa Waipoua Forest Community, the 40 minute documentary - Te Hiringa o te Tangata - was produced as part of the NPM Te Rau Tītapu Wānanga Research Project, which has been underway since 2011.

This project was initiated with the purpose of investigating and creating models of 'ideal' wānanga, which could inspire iwi communities not just in Te Roroa and Te Tai Tokerau, but around the country.

Te Rau Tītapu seeks to understand and document how the convening of these wānanga can reinforce and re-energise home communities, demonstrating how marae / hapū / iwi can work together to strengthen and deepen their knowledge and their relationships.

It is hoped that through defining these wānanga models we can contribute to the fostering of creativity and innovation that is key to the survival and flourishing of the marae and the people.

The film is an expression of how projects like these can inspire and revitalise communities, producing a unique energy of their own and reinforcing the qualities of perseverance and determination.
