Whāia ngā pae o te māramatanga
Ko te pae tawhiti, whāia kia tata
Ko te pae tata, whakamaua kia tinā
E puta ai ki te whaiao, ki te ao mārama!

Search in the innermost recesses of the intellect
To seek new knowledge as yet unexplored
As the past is purchased by the present
And the future is the goal of tomorrow

Over the coming months Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga will develop, seed and scope new research projects, that contribute to its research programme and themes. Advanced through NPM's researchers and collaborating partners, these new projects will also contribute to our collective mission and vision.

This seeding and scoping of new research will be achieved through a contestable fund to identify projects that have transformative potential.

Within a total investment of $500,000, two categories of projects will be made available:

  • Kia Tō Kia Tipu; Seeding Excellence – up to $25,000 for no more than one year duration. To seed development, inform research through literature, engagement and collaboration.

  • Kia Ārohi Kia Mārama; Scoping Excellence – up to $60,000 for no more than one year duration. To scope a research project, pilot, investigate approaches, methods, needs and requirements.

We are seeking projects that are innovative, inspiring, and lead to impact and real outcomes for communities.

For a project proposal to proceed, it must have a credible trajectory to a subsequent larger project, where greater impact would result.

Projects must have the potential for a clear transformative pathway, they must contribute to positive change within our communities and they should be no more than one year in duration.

The lead applicants must be Māori researchers, and be employed at one of our 21 Partner Institutions.

Collaboration with other institutions and organisations outside of the NPM network is permitted, and all researchers supported by this funding will be known as NPM researchers

The full Statement of Intent to seed and scope new research is attached.

A Request for Proposals (RFP) will be sent to all NPM researchers and partners by 31 July, and this RFP will provide further details on the purpose, requirements, application and assessment process.
