Project Summary

The project builds on a case study, “Ko te whaea te takere o te waka: Māori mothers as navigators of change,” which examined Māori mothers as key change-makers for their whānau.

The study produced a zine highlighting Māori participants’ stories of reclaiming mātauranga Māori for their tamariki/mokopuna. A key finding was the connection between mātauranga Māori reclamation and whakapapa.

This new project will extend the research by producing a second zine issue featuring a larger group of Māori mothers who are learning and reclaiming aspects of whakapapa. Ths Whakaaweawe grant enables production of additional zines and the organisation of a live and virtual art exhibition showcasing artwork from various Māori artists in the zine.
